The data center has rapidly changed over the past few years. Server virtualizationhas moved out of the confines of test and development and into mainstreamcomputing. With that shift, a monkey wrench has been thrown into the gears ofbackup. The root of the problem is straightforward 1 backup has historically beenbuilt with a number of mechanisms that expect the server, networks, and thestorage medium to be physical. That physical infrastructure meant less heavilyutilized hardware that had some room to spare.
No more. Now the consolidation of many virtual servers onto each physical server, resourcecontention, and around the clock compute mean that every bit of IO leaving or entering the physicalserver is precious. Traditional backup hastoo often done little to adapt, and this hasleft the door open to innovators ready totry something different.
Acronis has long been in the business ofmanaging and protecting data with extremeefficiency. Acronis cut their teeth in theimaging practices of the SMB andenterprise customer, with cloning andconversion tools that required extremespeed and throughput to get the job done. With low, level efficiency in tow, Acronisrapidly started tackling bigger enterprisetasks, such as mainstream data protection, data replication, disaster recovery, anddeploymentautomation.Buttheirtechnology products remain rooted inperformance and efficiency.
Acronis recently announced theysve turnedtheir imaging and storage expertise to the needs of virtual server backup, with Acronis vmProtect 6.It is no surprise they claim category, leading capabilities, including best of class functionality, withhigher efficiency and performance than the competition. But those claims are contentious in thishighly competitive virtual backup marketplace, and in our opinion, they require proof. For thisreason, Taneja Group turned our hands,on lab looking glass 1 what we call a Technology Validation 1upon Acronis vmProtect 6. Moreover, with a competitor recently claiming better performance than/traditional image, based recovery0, it is time to examine what it takes to lead this market. With this inmind, we stood Acronis vmProtect 6 up against this leading virtual backup competitor in a head,to,head shootout. The big question: has Acronis, a vendor of traditional image, based recovery turnedtheir expertise into winning performance? We found our answer, and it is a definitive yes. Table 1calls out select performance findings, and how well Acronis fared against the competition.
